Overview
This article describes menu item creation in Genius.
Finished Item Example
Account Menu
Throughout the Account Menu section you will see some of the following options:
New will allow you to create a new item under the section that you are working on.

- You will see the option to Show Deleted under every option under Account Menu if something has been
- When you select Show Deleted you will see a list of everything that was deleted from that section that you are in, such as You will see all deleted Items and the setup that the deleted Item had when it was deleted. You will also have the option to Restore the item that was deleted as well.

Show Account will show under every option under Account Menu but this option will only show if you are on an Account that has multiple locations and you are under one of the single locations and not under the full account.
The Search bar will be at the top under every option under the Account Menu giving you the ability to search the section that you are in for specific items.
When you are already in an Item, Ingredient, etc. this option will allow you to start creating a new option under the section that you are in. For example, if you are working on Items and you click this button this will start a new Item creation for you.
This option allows you to Duplicate the item that you are currently in so that it will keep all of the same properties of the item that you are duplicating.
This option will only appear if you are working on an account that has multiple locations. This is the Location Override option, which will allow you to set which location the item is assigned to and pricing for the different locations.
This option will allow you to delete the item that you are currently looking at.
This option will close out of the item that you are currently looking at so that you can get back to the full list of items under the section that you are currently working on.
This option allows you to save the item that you are working on.
When you see Set Image throughout the Account Menu, this option gives you the ability to assign an image for that item that you are working on.
Throughout the Account Menu under the different options when you are in a specific item you will see this icon. When you click on this icon it will take you automatically to the item that the Eye is next to.

- For example, if you are working on an item and you click the Eye next so the Kitchen Group that is selected, you will automatically be taken to that specific Kitchen Group and have the ability now view that item.

Throughout the Account Menu under the different options you will see the Trash Can icon under the settings of the item that you are working on. This icon will allow you to remove that setting from the item. For example, if you are working on an item and you have a Kitchen Group selected, if you choose the Trash Can, this will remove that Kitchen Group from this item.

- For example, if you are working on an item and you have multiple Kitchen Groups selected, if you choose this icon, this will remove all Kitchen Groups from this item at once.
Context Items
Context Items are located under Account Menu > Context Items.
What is a context item?
A context item is a way to further modify an ingredient outside of selecting or deselecting the ingredient.
- Example - If the customer would like light lettuce on their cheeseburger, the context “light” would edit the ingredient of lettuce and will print to the kitchen as Light Lettuce.
Creating Context Items
Example of Context Items; Light, Extra, On Side, etc.
- Select New.
- In the Name field you will enter the name for the Context Item that you are creating.
- In the Short Name field you have the choice to enter a Short Name if you would like. Short names will appear on Kitchen Chits, KDS, and when using small icons within the POS.
- In the Ingredients field you have the option to select from a drop down list of Ingredients that you have already created.
- In the Multipliers field next to the Ingredient you select you will need to enter in the Multiplier that you would like for this option. Example - Extra will be 2.00 and it will charge double the default price you have listed for the ingredient, On the Side will be 1.00 or 0.00 and it will not charge anything.
- Available Online, if this is checked this will allow customers to use this Context Item when ordering online.
- Available for Kiosk / Skip the Line - if this is checked this will allow customers to use this Context Item on the kiosk or skip the line when placing orders.
- Select Save at the bottom right.
Sizes
Sizes are located under Account Menu > Sizes
What is a Size?
Sizes are used to designate the size of an ingredient / item. Example - Small, Medium, Large, 12’’, 14”, 16” pizza.
Creating Sizes
The following will help in creating the Small, Medium, and Large of our cheeseburger.
- Select New
- In the Name field you will enter the name for the Size Item that you are creating. For example, Small
- In the Short Name field you have the choice to enter a Short Name if you would like. Short names will appear on Kitchen Chits, KDS, and when using small icons within the POS.
- In the Assigned Items field you have the option to select from a drop down list of Items that you have already created and assign a Price that Item with this Size.
- Available Online, if this is checked this will allow customers to use this Context Item when ordering online.
- Available for Kiosk / Skip the Line - if this is checked this will allow customers to use this Context Item on the kiosk or skip the line when placing orders.
- Select Save at the bottom right.
Attributes
- Attributes are located under Account Menu > Attributes
- Attributes will have an option to Edit Sort Order.
- When editing a sort order, you can click and drag to which order you want your attributes First at the top, last at the bottom.
What is an Attribute?
An Attribute describes if the item has any allergens, spice level, or apart of an award winning group. Example - Gluten Free, Vegan, Mild, Hot, Award Winning, Ect.
Creating Attributes
The following will help in creating the Gluten Free and Vegan Attributes for our cheeseburger.
- Select New
- In the Name field you will enter the name for the Attribute that you are creating. For Example, Vegan
- Available Online, if this is checked this will allow customers to use this Context Item when ordering online.
- Available for Kiosk / Skip the Line - if this is checked this will allow customers to use this Context Item on the kiosk or skip the line when placing orders.
- In the Assigned Items field you have the option to select from a drop down list of Items that you have already created and assign this Attribute to that item.
- If you would like to add a picture for this Attribute, Select Set Icon in the top Left next to the Name This will bring you to a new window to choose from a preset set of icons. You can also upload your own icon with the + button.
- Select Save
Ingredients
Ingredients are located under Account Menu > Ingredients
What is an Ingredient?
Ingredients are foods or options that allow you to modify items when you are inputting orders.
- Example - When ordering a Cheeseburger will have options for toppings and sauces. The ingredients you may have for this item will be options such as lettuce, onions, and tomatoes.
Creating Ingredients
- Select New
- In the Name field you will enter the name for the Ingredient that you are
- Example; American Cheese, Mozzarella Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, Ketchup.
- In the Short Name field you have the choice to enter a Short Name if you would like.
- The Sub Item field will allow you to choose an Item that has already been The Sub Item will link this Ingredient to the Menu Item so that this Ingredient will take on the settings of the already created Item you selected.
- Example - Steak comes with a baked Baked potato is a part of the steak item and needs options of sour cream and butter. The baked potato ingredient would take on the options of the baked potato item that has those options configured.
- More info will go into sub-items near the end of the document to configure.
- In the Context Items field you will have the option to select Context Items that are already If you select a Context Item, you will have the option to enter in a Multiplier.
- The Multiplier will multiply the default price for this Ingredient that you have set by the Multiplier you enter.
- Extra will be 00 and it will charge double the default price you have listed for the ingredient, On the Side will be 1.00 or 0.00 and it will not charge anything.
- You can also Create a new Context Item within the Ingredients screen by typing in the new Context Item name and then hitting enter.
- In the Assigned Modifiers field you have the option to select the Modifier(s) that you already have created that you would like this Ingredient added to.
- The Misc. Ingredients will allow you to customize the price of the Ingredient within the POS.
- Available Online, if this is checked this will allow customers to use this Context Item when ordering online.
- Available for Kiosk / Skip the Line - if this is checked this will allow customers to use this Context Item on the kiosk or skip the line when placing orders.
- Select Save.
Modifiers
Modifiers are located under Account Menu > Modifiers
What is a Modifier?
Modifiers are groups of ingredients that you have the ability to assign to an item.
- Example - Bread Choice will contain the Ingredients that you have already created such as White, Wheat
Creating a Modifier
- Select New
- In the Name field you will enter the name for the Modifier that you are creating.
- In the Show Modifier Name field you will have a drop down with options to select from.
- Disabled - Will not show the name of Modifier Name on the POS screen or Kitchen Chit / KDS
- Ticket Screen - WIll only show the Modifier Name on the POS Ticket Screen'
- Kitchen - Will only show the Modifier Name on Kitchen Chits / KDS
- Both - Will show the Modifier Name on both Kitchen Chits / KDS and POS Ticket Screen
- In the Minimum Choices field you have the option to enter the minimum amount of choices required to select on the Modifier.
- Example - If you input 0, you do not have to select any If you input 1, the POS will force you to select 1 Ingredient from this Modifier.
- In the Maximum Choices field you have the option to enter the maximum amount of choices that are able to be selected.
- Example - If you input 0, you will be able to choose an unlimited amount of Ingredients from this If you input 1, you will only be able to choose up to 2 Ingredients from this Modifier.
- In the Number of Included Ingredients field you will have the option to enter in the number of ingredients that are included without charging.
- If you have defaults applied to the item, they will not apply to the included count.
- Allow Half & Half, when this is checked this option allows you to choose half & half ingredients in this Modifier group, this option is typically used more for pizza like items.
When this option is selected, a new option for Multiplier will appear so you can charge your Half & Half ingredients accordingly. - Allow Duplicate Ingredients, when this is checked this option will allow you to add the same Ingredient multiple times.
This option will be greyed out unless you have 2 or more entered in the Maximum Choice options. - Allow Substitutes, when this option is checked this option will allow you to substitute any default ingredients that are selected on the on the item
This option will allow you to substitute a default ingredient for another ingredient in this group at no cost. - Ignore Minimum Choices, when this option is checked this will allow you to ignore the minimum choices set at the POS This will not apply to Online Order, App Ordering, or on the Kiosk.
Example - On the POS the staff member would be able to bypass the minimum amount but when ordering online the customer would still have to select the minimum amount of - Button Color will allow you to change the color of the button that will show on the POS for the Ingredients in this Modifier . You have the option to select a color in the color wheel or a color in the Button Color also supports color hex codes.
- In the Ingredients field you have the option to select from a drop down list of Ingredients that you have already created that you would like to be in this If you select an Ingredient you will have a few more options that you can fill out.
- The 4 lines on the left will allow you to click and drag the Ingredients to the order you would like the Ingredients to appear on the POS within the
- Default Price will allow you to set the standard price to charge for this
- Size Pricing will allow you to set a standard price for this Ingredient based on what size is selected for the Item this Modifier is assigned to if the Item has Size You can change between the size options by clicking on the size that is listed above the Size Price field.
- Override will allow you to select a different Kitchen Group if this Ingredient needs to be printed to a different printer or KDS
- Assigned Items will allow you to select an Item that this Modifier will need to be assigned to
- Available Online, if this is checked this will allow customers to use this Context Item when ordering online.
- Available for Kiosk / Skip the Line, if this is checked this will allow customers to use this Context Item on the kiosk or skip the line when placing orders.
- Select Save.
Sections
Sections are located under Account Menu > Sections
What is a Section?
A Section is a group of specific Items relevant to the section. Those sections can then be applied to a Menu Group.
Example - a Section could be named Appetizers, Entrees, Sides, or Drinks.
Creating Sections
- Select New.
- In the Name field, enter a name for the Section you are creating.
- In the Menu Groups field, you can Create or Select a Menu Group that a Section is apart of
- In the Assigned Items field, you can select Items that you have created within the drop down. You can also start typing the name of the item to find it faster.
- Use Specific Hours will make an item unavailable outside of specified hours in store.
- If checked, new options will appear.
- Specific Hours will allow you to select a day.
- Once a Day is selected, you can configure a Start Time and End time for the section.
- Multiple times can be selected for a single day.
- Available Online, if this is checked this will allow customers to use this Section when ordering online.
- Available for Kiosk / Skip the Line, if this is checked this will allow customers to use this Section on the kiosk or skip the line when placing orders.
- Select Save.
Kitchen Groups
Kitchen Groups are located under Account Menu > Kitchen Groups
What is a Kitchen Group?
Kitchen Groups can be used to divide similar items on the menu into different categories based on where they are made. Kitchen Groups can be paired with display formats to ensure the items can be routed to the appropriate place in the kitchen.
Creating a Kitchen Group
- Select New.
- In the Name field, create a name for what you want to call the Kitchen Group.
- In the Assigned Items, Select the items you want to be a part of the Kitchen Group.
You can also assign Kitchen Groups on the Item itself. - Select Save.
Report Categories
Report Categories are located under Account Menu > Report Categories
What is a Report Category?
Report Categories are used to group menu items together for generating reports. When a report is generated, it will contain the categories created with appropriate sales values for each category. Any items that are not in a report category will appear on reports under uncategorized.
Creating a Report Category
- Select
- In the Name field, enter a name for the Report Category
- In Assigned Items, select the items that will be part of the Report Category. You can also assign Report Categories on the Item.
- Select Save.
Tags
Tags are located under Account Menu > Tags
What is a Tag?
Tags are used to identify items that are associated with discounts, pricing, and applying taxes at room-level.
Creating a Tag
- Select
- In the Name field, enter a Name for the Tag you are creating.
- Select a Tag Color to be associated with the Tag. You can use HEX Code, Color Wheel, or pre-selected colors.
- In the Assigned Items, Select the items you want to be a part of the Tag.
You can also assign Tags on the Item itself. - Select Save.
Items
Items are located under Account Menu > Items
What is an Item?
An item is the main item that will be displayed when ordered. It is a combination of everything we have set up previously.
Creating Items
- Select New.
- In the Name field you will enter the name for the Item that you are creating.
- In the Short Name field you have the choice to enter a Short Name if you would like.
- If you would like to add a picture for this Item, Select Set Icon in the top Left next to the Name field. This will bring you to a new window.
Do note, no images are pre-populated when creating items. - In the Description field you have the option to enter more information about the item if you would like to.
Example - “Best burger in town!”
If you enter a Description this information will show on the POS when you are using Large Tiles on the Menu. - In the SKU / Lookup field you can enter in a SKU for the Item.
Example - Selling T-Shirts, keychains, etc. - In the Price field you will enter the price you are going to charge for this Item.
If using size pricing, sizes will override the price on the Item. - In the Cost field you have the option to enter in the associated costs for this Item.
If using size pricing, the size cost will override the cost field. - In the Tax field you have the option to choose one of the following three options:
Taxable - The item's price does not include Tax. The Tax will be added as a separate line item on the receipt.
Tax Exempt - No tax will be applied to this item.
Tax Included - The item’s price already includes tax. This allows you to present your customers with a flat price. - If Non-Revenue is selected the Item will not report to revenue.
Non-Revenue is used mainly for Gift Cards. - In the Measurement field you will have the option to choose one of the following four
options:
Not Measured - Not Measured is the most commonly used setting for Menu Items
Per Unit - Per Unit charges the Item by the number of units entered
Example - How many chicken nuggets?
Weight Per Ounce - Weight Per Ounce charges the item by ounce. When priced
by ounce, this can work with or without weight scale
Weight Per Pound - Weight Per Pound charges the item by pound. When priced
by pound, this can work with or without weight scale
Per Minute - Per Minute charges the item by minute
Example - Pool tables or bowling alleys. - Default Course will allow you to apply a course number to the item automatically. If you add a Default Course to the item it can be changed in the POS at any time.
- If Prevent Discounts is selected, this feature will restrict the Item from having its price changed via discount or adjustment.
- Item feature will set the item price to be customized on the POS. This option is used for Open Items that do not have a designated price.
- If Hide on Receipt is selected, the Item will not show its name and price on the customer receipt. This option will only work when the price of this Item is $0.00.
- In the Stored Value field you will have the option to choose one of the following three options:
Disabled - Disabled is the most commonly used setting for Menu Items
Gift Card - If the Item that you are creating is for a Gift Card to be sold you will need to select Gift Card
Accounts Payable - If the Item that you are creating is to pay off a House Account you will need to select Accounts Payable.
Accounts Payable ONLY works with Monetary Gift. - If Tippable is checked, this will allow the item to contribute to service charges, auto-gratuities, and suggested tip amounts.
- If Separate Seats are checked, when this item is added to a ticket, it will always add the item to the new seat.
- If Prompt for Quantity is checked, when this item is added toa ticket the POS will prompt for the quantity.
- If Entree is checked, this will show on the Info Screen on the POS and will contribute to entree reporting.
- In the Half & Half Pricing field you will have the option to choose one of the following three options: **Half & Half Pricing only applies to modifiers configured as Half & Half.**
None - None will leave Half & Half Pricing turned off
Most Expensive Half - Most Expensive Half will allow the POS to check the total of all ingredients across the modifiers on each half, the more expensive half will retain the prices while the lower half will be zeroed out.
Step Pricing - First ingredient on the half will get charged, next ingredient is not charged, next would be charged, then next would not be charged. - In the Report Category field you have the option to select from a drop down list of Report Categories that you have already created. Choose the Report Category that you would like this Item to be assigned to.
- In the Kitchen Group field you have the option to select from a drop down list of Kitchen Groups that you have already created. Choose the Kitchen Group that is needed for this Item if one is needed.
- In the Tags field you have the option to select from a drop down list of Tags that you have already created. Choose any Tags that you would like to apply to this item.
- In the Attribute field you have the option to select from a drop down list of Attributes that you have already Choose any Attributes that you would like to apply to this item.
- In the Sizes Field you have the option to select from a drop down list of Sizes that you have already created. Choose any Sizes that you would like to apply to this item, you can choose more than one. When you select a Size you will have more fields to fill out for each Size that you select.
o You have the ability to arrange the sizes to the order you would like to see them on the POS by using the 4 lines to the left of the Size Name, you can do this by clicking and dragging the size to the order of your liking.
o In the Price field you will have set the price for the size you selected. This Price you input will override the price set above.
o In the Cost field you will have the option to set the cost of the size you selected. The Cost you input will override the cost set aboube.
o If Default is selected the POS will default to this size when the item is added to a ticket on in the POS. You can change the size of the item on the POS when needed. - In the Sections field you have the option to select from a drop down list of Sections that you have already created. Choose any Section that you would like to apply to this item, you can choose more than one if you need to.
o You must have at least 1 section assigned to an item for the item to show on the POS. - In the Modifiers field you have the option to select from a drop down list of Modifiers that you have already created. Choose any Modifier that you would like assigned to this item, you can choose more than one if you need to.
o After you select a Modifier you will see each Ingredient listed below.
o You have the option to select any of the Ingredients listed under the Modifier. The Ingredients selected will indicate that these Ingredients are default Ingredients on the item. Default Ingredients will not print to the kitchen or show on the KDS. Default Ingredients will also not come with an extra charge if a price was given to the ingredient when the Modifier was created.
o To the right of the Ingredient Name you will see an icon that looks like a computer if you select this icon, this will disable this specific ingredient from Online Ordering.
o You will also see the computer and phone icon to the right of the modifier. Selecting it will disable the entire modifier on this item from being ordered online. - Select a color from the Override Button Color You can choose from preconfigured colors or from the color wheel.
- Use Specific Hours will make an item unavailable outside of specified hours in store.
o If checked, new options will appear.
o Specific Hours will allow you to select a day.
o Once a Day is selected, you can configure a Start Time and End time for the section.
o Multiple times can be selected for a single day. - Check Available Online if you want this item to be seen online by customers.
- Check Available For Kiosk / Skip the Line if you want this item to be seen by the kiosk and skip the line orders.
- Select Save.
Sub Items
Sub-Item option is located in Account Menu > Ingredients > Selected Ingredients > Sub Item
What is a Sub Item?
A Sub Item defines which Menu Items are linked to a selected Ingredient. Genius POS will automatically insert the menu item in its place. Sub Items will allow you to have an Ingredient use Modifiers from another Item, for example, if you have a Steak and Baked Potato, when you choose the Baked Potato you will be able to have other options for the Baked Potato.
Creating a Sub Item
- Create your Item that you will use as your Sub Item, this will be the Item that you would like your Ingredient to use the Modifiers
o When you create this Item you can add the Modifier that you would like to this Item so that when this Ingredient is ordered the options will be there to add. - Create your Ingredient.
- In the Sub Item option you can choose from the Items that you have created in your Menu, select the Menu Item needed for this Ingredient.
- Add this Ingredient that has the Sub Item assigned to the Modifier that you would like this Ingredient to be assigned to.
When selecting the Regular Fries Ingredient, a new tab will appear under Classic Burger.
This tab will appear when you have a Sub Item set for the Ingredient.
Selecting the Regular Fries tab will bring you to a new window where you can select the options you want on the Ingredient.
The options displayed here are from the Regular Fries Item that is assigned as the Sub Item on the Regular Fries Ingredient.
