Overview
This article describes how to configure Heartland Retail to process payments via DataCap DC Direct using the PAX A35 device. The A35 terminal is an Android-based, multilane transaction processing and mobile smart terminal.

Requirements
- Merchants should be running Heartland Retail version 2024.03.190 or later (Web, iOS, or Android)
- If the Web is accessed, the merchant should ensure they are using the most recent version of Heartland Retail Connect.
- Heartland Retail POS hardware (stations and peripherals) and Datacap payment devices must connect to the same Wi-Fi network.
- If desired, verify with our support team that Digital Signature Capture and Local Duplicate Checking are enabled.
A35 Connection and Configuration
Connecting the A35 Device
- Long, thick cord. Plug this cord into the back of the PAX device.
- Short cord with Red Plug. If your site uses Ethernet, plug the Ethernet cord into this cord’s red plug. If your site uses W-Fi, you need not connect this cord.
- Long thin cord with VGA Plug type. Not used.
- Long thin cord with USB Plug type. Not all setups require this cord. It can be used to power the device for Windows and Android users. It's also great for scenarios where the device will be connected via Wi-Fi to the Android Elo.
- Long thin cord with Electrical Plug. Plug this cord into the electrical outlet.
As the device boots up, you will see a SETUP screen like the one shown below. Please do not do anything on this screen. After a few seconds, the system will transition away from it into the Welcome screen.
Accessing the Android Desktop
- Touch the black area at the bottom of the A35 screen and swipe up. This will reveal the Android Home menu.
- On the Android Home menu, quickly touch the back key ◁ twice.
- At the password prompt on the Back Desktop modal, enter ‘pax9876@@’ without the quotes and tap the green checkmark.
- This will take you to the Android desktop.
Connecting the A35 to Your Network
Wi-Fi Connection
Static Wi-Fi
- From the Android Desktop, select Settings.
- At the password prompt, enter ‘pax9876@@’ without the quotes, tap the green checkmark, and select OK to confirm.
- Select Network & Internet and then select Wi-Fi.
- On the page that displays, select the SSID of your Wi-Fi access point.
- Enter your network password and select Advanced options, then IP Settings.
- Touch DHCP and select Static.
- Enter the values for each the following fields:
- IP address
- Gateway
- Network prefix length (this is your subnet mask in CIDR notation)
- DNS 1
- DNS 2
- Select Connect and then touch the home button to return to the Android Desktop.
DHCP Wi-Fi
- From the Android Desktop, select Settings.
- At the password prompt, enter ‘pax9876@@’ without the quotes, tap the green checkmark, and select OK to confirm.
- Select Network & Internet and then select Wi-Fi.
- On the page that displays, select the SSID of your Wi-Fi access point.
- Enter your network password and select Connect.
- Touch the home button to return to the Android Desktop.
Ethernet Connection
- From the Android Desktop, select Settings.
- At the password prompt, enter ‘pax9876@@’ without the quotes, tap the green checkmark, and select OK to confirm.
- Select Network & Internet and then select Ethernet.
- Select Ethernet Configuration and then select Static.
- Enter the values for the following under the Static IP settings, scrolling as needed:
- IP address
- Gateway
- Network prefix length (this is your subnet mask in CIDR notation)
- DNS 1
- DNS 2
- Select Save.
- Touch the home button to return to the Android Desktop.
DC Direct Software and Parameter Updates
- From the Android Desktop, select the DCDirect app.
- Select Get Parameters.
- The device will display the download progress so you can easily see when the process is complete.
Return to the Welcome Screen
Once your device is configured, follow the following steps to return to the Welcome screen and begin transaction processing.
Select the PXRetailer app.
The PXRetailer screen will display. As when the device boots up, it will display a SETUP screen like the one shown below. Please do not do anything on this screen. After a few seconds, the system will transition away from it into the Welcome screen.
NOTE: You must be on the Welcome screen to begin processing transactions.
Reboot the PAX A35
Should you ever need to reboot the PAX A35, you can do so by simultaneously pressing the red X and the green O buttons.
Configure Heartland Retail
Credit Card Processing
Follow the steps below to configure Heartland Retail for Datacap credit card processing for each location.
- Go to Settings.
- Go to Credit Cards, select a location, and then select Add Gateway.
- Select Datacap from the list.
- Enter the Merchant ID and Pinpad Serial Numbers (separated by a comma). If you would like to enable manual entry at the location, slide the Enable Manual Entry Mode toggle to the right so that the word Yes is displayed. Select Save.
- When the merchant enables manual entry for a location, the feature is enabled based on the role. To enable this feature for a role, go to Settings, select Roles, and then select the role that should have access. On the Permissions tab, in the Sales/POS section, find the permission called Manual credit card entry and slide the toggle to the left so that it reads On.
- Next, you’ll want to enable auto-reconciliation for each station at each location. To do this, go to Settings.
- Go to Locations, select a location, and then select the Stations tab.
- Select each station and slide the Reconcile payments when refreshing the POS toggle to Yes.
Gift Card Processing
Follow the steps below to configure Heartland Retail for Datacap gift card processing.
- Go to Settings.
- Go to Payment Types, select Gift Card, and select With Datacap Gift from the Process gift cards dropdown.
- Enter values for the Merchant ID (MID) and the Pinpad Serial Numbers (SN). If you have more than one pinpad, enter the serial numbers separated by commas.
- Enter desired amount in the Maximum Allowed Refund Amount. Refunds issued to gift cards in excess of this amount will not be allowed.
- Select Save.
Point of Sale
Make sure your device is plugged into a power source and connected to your store's network via Ethernet cable or W-Fi (depending on the device).
- Go to POS Settings, select Reload All Devices, and choose the Datacap device from the Payment Device dropdown.
- Select the desired printer from the Receipt Printer dropdown.
Transaction Operations
Payments & Voids
- To add a credit or debit card payment:
- Tap the Tender button at the bottom of the screen for in-store sales.
- For sales orders, tap the Add Payment button along the right side of the screen.
- Tap the Add Payment button on the window that opens.
Please note that the amount will default to the balance due. Should you wish to process a partial payment, simply enter the desired payment amount in the Amount box before processing the payment.
- Follow the instructions on the payment device to complete the payment.
- To void a transaction:
- For credit card payments, tap the Void button next to the transaction detail in the lower portion of the screen.
- Since Datacap does not support debit voids, use the Return option as detailed in the next section for debit card payments.
Returns
- To process a credit card return, after selecting the desired ticket, tap the dropdown button to the left of the item to be returned and select Return.
- Tap the Add Return button on the window that opens. Please note that the amount will default to the total amount paid. Should you wish to process a partial refund, simply enter the desired amount in the Amount box before processing the refund.
- Follow the instructions on the payment device to complete the transaction.
Datacap Transaction Portal
Datacap offers merchants a convenient online portal to view transactions at any time.
