We recommend that businesses operating in Canada, especially those who accept Interac Debit payments, opt to print credit card receipts from the payment device instead of using those generated by the Heartland Retail Point of Sale. This will ensure that legal and contractual obligations are met. A summary of those requirements is below.
The payment terminal must print the credit card receipt automatically or offer and provide it at the Cardholder’s request. The credit card receipt must be:
- Produced by a printer that is attached to or that is part of the payment terminal
- Printed no later than when the payment terminal receives an appropriate response to the payment request from the Issuer
- Provided upon completion of the transaction, regardless of the transaction’s final status
The minimum information required on the credit card receipt is below:
- Local date and time of the transaction
- Issuer authorization number
- Unique number or code assigned to the payment terminal
- Business name
- Business address
- Type of transaction
- Transaction amount
- Card type
- Account type (for Interac Debit transactions - savings or chequing)
- Retrieval reference number
- Masked PAN
- Disposition of the transaction (approved or declined)
- If the transaction was processed as chip / insert, the AID must be included
- No confidential, financial, or personal Cardholder information other than what is listed above
- The customer copy of the credit card receipt must be in the Cardholder’s preferred language (English or French)
- The merchant copy of the credit card receipt must in the language associated with the payment device
To enable printing from the payment device, you will need to:
- Go to the back office
- Select Settings
- Select Credit Cards
- Select your location
- Add or edit the HPA (Heartland Payment App) gateway
- Under Credit Card Slip Printing, select Payment Device
In addition, receipt printing must be enabled on your payment device.
Taking these measures will ensure that:
- Credit card receipts are not generated by Heartland Retail
- Both customer and merchant copies of the credit card receipts are printed from the payment device
It’s important to note that this setting does not apply to itemized receipts, which will continue to be generated from Heartland Retail.
