Overview
This article describes how to configure a Canadian Heartland Retail location to use the Heartland Pay App (HPA) for card payment processing. HPA allows merchants greater flexibility in credit card device options to meet their ever-evolving needs. At this time, HPA supports processing on the following payment terminals:
- Verifone T650C
- Verifone T650P
The Heartland Pay App is currently available for the iOS version of Heartland Retail.

Prerequisites
- Merchants must be running Heartland Retail version 2025.01.280 or later.
- Check the Heartland Pay App feature flag in Landlord.
- POS and payment device must be on the same network for internet
- Payment device must be running 02.17.00.B
Verifone Configuration
View Communication and Connection Detail - WiFi

Select the Verifone home icon
on the Android navigation menu
on the device and it will display the screen pictured here. - Tap the ^ icon centered near the bottom of the screen.
- On the screen that displays, select Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi.
- Select the desired Wi-Fi network and enter credentials to connect. Please ensure that both the POS and device are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Once connected, you can view the IP address your Wi-Fi network has assigned to your device. Make a note of this so you can easily identify your device when connecting it to the Retail POS when instructed later in this guide.
Enhance Device Usage & Experience Detail
- To adjust your device’s sleep mode: Go to Settings > Display > Advanced > Sleep.
- Select your desired timeout value from the available options. These range from 15 seconds to 24 hours. While there is no option to turn off sleep mode, you can select a longer timeout value to minimize sleep mode.

Select the Menu icon (with horizontal bars) shown below:
- Swipe left or right on each app until all running apps are cleared.

Then reboot the device by pressing the power button and selecting the option to Restart the device.
Back Office Configuration
Enable the HPA Gateway by following these steps:

From the POS, go to Settings > Credit Cards and select a location.

Select Credit Cards and then select +Add Gateway.

Select ‘HPA Heartland Pay App’.

Canadian* locations are presented with a banner recommending Credit Card Receipts be printed from the Payment Device** to meet legal requirements. Press Save.
* A location is Canadian when the Country selection is “Canada” in Settings > Location for the selected location..
** The payment device must also be configured to print credit card receipts.

Once the gateway is enabled, the system will display a green toast message indicating the gateway was successfully added.
POS Configuration
In the POS, the payment device must be associated with the station. To do this, log into the POS:
- Select a station.
- Select the hamburger menu button.

Select Settings.

Select Reload All Devices

Select your payment device from the Payment Device dropdown and from the Customer Display Device dropdown.
In the image above, the Heartland Pay App is selected for both the Payment Device and the Customer Display Device fields. We recommend following this example in order to take full advantage of Verifone features such as line item display and digital signature capture.
With the HPA Gateway enabled, merchants can process the following transaction types:
- Credit Sale
- Credit Return
- Interac Debit Sale with PIN
- Interac Debit Return
- Manual Entry Sale
- Manual Entry Return
- NFC / Contactless / Tap
- Chip / Insert
- Host Batch Close
- Line-Item Display
- Digital Signature Capture
Payment Reconciliation
To ensure smooth operations and accurate payment processing, Heartland Retail offers robust built-in reconciliation capabilities for card transactions. This includes automatic reconciliation for all payments processed via Heartland, as well as manual reconciliation functionality.
